TV wall bracket types guide

Choosing the right TV bracket is one of the most important decisions when setting up a wall-mounted TV. Get it wrong and you'll end up with a TV that can't be viewed comfortably from your couch, or worse โ€” one that doesn't stay on the wall. Get it right and you'll have a clean, beautiful entertainment setup you'll love for years.

In this guide, we break down the three main bracket types, what wall types they work with, and how to pick the perfect one for your room.

The 3 Main Types of TV Brackets

1. Flat/Fixed Wall Mount Brackets

Fixed brackets hold your TV flush against the wall with no movement. They're the most affordable option and create the sleekest, most low-profile look โ€” the TV sits as close to the wall as physically possible.

Best for: Rooms where the sofa or viewing position is directly in front of the TV and at roughly the same height. Ideal for living rooms with a dedicated seating arrangement.

Not ideal for: Rooms where you need to view the TV from different angles, or where the TV will be mounted high (e.g. above a fireplace).

2. Tilting Brackets

Tilting brackets allow you to angle the TV screen downward (typically 5โ€“15 degrees). This is extremely useful when the TV is mounted higher than eye level โ€” for example, above a fireplace or on a high wall.

Best for: TVs mounted above eye level. Bedrooms where the TV is mounted high. Any situation where you need to reduce screen glare by angling the panel.

Not ideal for: Situations where you need to swivel the TV left or right to different viewing positions.

3. Full-Motion (Articulating) Brackets

Full-motion brackets โ€” also called articulating arms โ€” offer the greatest flexibility. They let you swivel, tilt, and extend the TV in virtually any direction. The TV can be pulled out from the wall and angled toward any seating position.

Best for: Open-plan living spaces where the TV needs to be viewed from multiple positions (e.g. from the kitchen, dining area, and lounge). Corner walls. Bedrooms where you watch TV from different positions.

Not ideal for: Situations where you want the TV to sit completely flush with the wall, as full-motion brackets hold the TV further from the surface.

What Wall Type Do You Have?

Beyond choosing a bracket type, you also need to consider your wall type:

  • Plasterboard (most common in newer Sydney homes): Must be mounted into timber or steel studs for safety โ€” never into the plasterboard alone.
  • Brick walls: Require masonry drill bits and appropriate expanding anchors or resin anchors. Very strong once done correctly.
  • Concrete walls: Similar to brick โ€” require masonry bits and heavy-duty anchors. Common in apartment buildings.
  • Feature stone or tile walls: Possible but requires specialist drill bits. Best handled by a professional.

TV VESA Pattern โ€” Does the Bracket Fit Your TV?

Every TV bracket has a VESA rating โ€” a measurement (in millimetres) that describes the spacing of the mounting holes on the back of the TV. Common VESA sizes are 200x200, 400x400, and 600x400. Before purchasing a bracket, check your TV's VESA pattern in the user manual or on the manufacturer's website and match it to the bracket's supported VESA range.

Weight Capacity โ€” Is the Bracket Rated for Your TV?

Every bracket has a maximum weight rating. Large TVs (75"+) can weigh 30โ€“50kg, so make sure your bracket is rated above the weight of your TV. We always recommend using a bracket rated at least 20% above your TV's actual weight for safety margin.
